The Minister of Interior Mr. Constantinos Ioannou met today with the President Mr. Andreas Kitromilides and members of the Union of Cyprus Communities. The meeting discussed, among other things, the progress of the implementation of the Local Government Reform in the Communities, as well as the housing policy and the Support Plans for mountainous, remote, disadvantaged and rural areas.
Regarding the implementation of the Local Government Reform, the meeting reaffirmed by both sides the assessment that the clustering of the Communities is proceeding according to the timetables. The Minister of Interior reiterated to the delegation of the Union of Cyprus Communities the conviction that the reform of Local Government and the creation of Service Delivery Clusters will have multiple benefits for the Communities.
As Mr Ioannou said, the purpose of the clustering is the adequate staffing and the creation of proper structures with appropriate and qualified personnel, so that the Communities operate on the basis of correct and legal procedures, providing rural citizens with better quality services. At the same time, through a more equitable distribution of state subsidies, the aim is to implement development projects that will improve the quality of life of the residents of the Communities.
In addition, the Minister of Interior informed the Union of Cyprus Communities about the Ministry's intention to revise the Housing Plans for the Revitalization of Mountainous, Arid and Disadvantaged Areas and Rural Areas, which are valid from 2019. According to the Minister, the processing of the Plans is expected to be completed in March and the amendments will come into effect with the new notice to be issued in April. In the same spirit, and with the main objective of providing incentives to existing and new residents of mountainous areas, ways of differentiating the criteria for granting the support allowance to residents of mountainous communities are being considered in order to include more communities and allow more citizens to benefit from the support.
