The Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment, Dr Maria Panayiotou, met yesterday with a group of experts from Israel and Switzerland in the field of biological management of rodents using the anthropocyte, led by Professor Yossi Leshen. The meeting took place in the context of the team's visit to Cyprus, between 19 and 21 March.

The experts' visit takes place in the context of their cooperation with the working group of the National Action Plan for the anthropogenic management of rodents in Cyprus. The purpose of the visit is to document the achievements of the Cypriot project, as well as to record the activity of the project in the field, in the context of producing a documentary on the project at regional level, which is expected to be completed around the end of 2024 and to receive a global exposure.

The Minister's meeting with the expert team was also attended by members of the National Action Plan working group from BirdLife Cyprus and the Game and Wildlife Service. During the meeting the achievements of Israel's equivalent programme for biological control of rodents, which has been in place for 40 years with over 5,000 artificial nests currently installed in rural areas of the country, were presented. It was also mentioned that on a regional level the programme involves, in addition to Cyprus, Jordan, Palestine, Greece and Morocco.

Their plans for further cooperation were also presented, while the role that Cyprus could play as a successful example of reducing the use of pesticides through human pesticides and as a model of cooperation between government agencies and environmental organisations was also discussed. The meeting also discussed ideas and issues for improving the actions included in the National Action Plan. Acknowledging its positive results, Dr Panagiotou expressed her commitment to the Ministry's continued support of the National Action Plan.
