The Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment Mr.Petros Xenophontos had today, Monday 18 September 2023, a formal meeting with the Minister of Fisheries and Marine Resources of Sierra Leone Madam Princess Dugba, as part of her official visit to Cyprus.
During the meeting, which was held in a cordial atmosphere at the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment, the possibilities for further development of cooperation between the two countries in the areas of competence of the two Ministries were discussed.
Xenophontos briefed Madam Princess Dugba on the responsibilities of his Ministry, particularly in relation to fisheries, agriculture and marine and agricultural research, while expressing the Ministry's readiness to cooperate with Sierra Leone in selected areas of common interest. Emphasis was placed on fisheries and a presentation was made on the objectives and areas of expertise of the Department of Fisheries and Marine Research.
The Sierra Leonean Minister of Fisheries and Marine Resources, after thanking the Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment for his prompt response to her request for a meeting at the Ministry, expressed her desire to explore opportunities for cooperation and to promote bilateral cooperation between the two countries on issues including fisheries and marine resources, as well as agriculture and food security.
Following a constructive exchange of views, it was decided to develop cooperation between the two countries on fisheries, fisheries control and aquaculture at the level of a Memorandum of Understanding, with a view to exchanging expertise and best practices in the fisheries sector.
