[PIO] Meeting of the Deputy Minister of State for European Affairs with the Speaker of the House of Representatives

In the framework of her contacts for the preparation of the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the European Union (EU) in 2026, the Deputy Minister for European Affairs Ms Marilena Raouna had a meeting with the Speaker of the House of Representatives Ms Anita Demetriou, at the House of Representatives.

During the meeting, Ms Raouna had the opportunity to brief the Speaker of the House of Representatives extensively on the planning and progress of the preparations for the assumption of the Presidency of the Council of the EU by the Republic of Cyprus in the first half of 2026. In this context, the important role of the House of Representatives both in the preparatory stage of the Presidency and during its implementation was discussed.

The Deputy Minister stressed that preparations are proceeding at an intensive pace by the Secretariat of the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the EU, in close cooperation and coordination with all Ministries and Deputy Ministries. She referred to the issue of staffing, noting that the mapping of needs both in Cyprus and in Brussels has been completed. As regards the agenda under preparation, he said that the mapping of the inherited agenda has been completed. He said that the preparation of the programme of the Trio Presidency, together with Poland and Denmark, is also at an advanced stage, while he stressed that the consultation for the preparation of the programme and priorities of the Cyprus Presidency will start within the year.

Finally, Ms Raouna referred to the important role of the House of Representatives in promoting the parliamentary dimension of the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the EU and added that she looked forward to a smooth cooperation with the House. He also assured that he would provide regular updates on the progress of the preparatory work, including the formulation of the political priorities of the Cyprus Presidency.
