In the context of her contacts for the preparation of the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the EU in 2026, the Deputy Minister for European Affairs, Ms Marilena Raouna, had a meeting today with the President of the Ecologists' Movement - Citizens' Co-operation, Mr George Perdikis.

After the meeting, the Deputy Minister made the following statement to media representatives. The meeting took place in the framework of my cycle of contacts with the parliamentary parties in view of the assumption of the second Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the EU. Cyprus will assume the Presidency of the Council of the EU in the first half of 2026, as part of the Trio Presidency, together with Poland and Denmark, which starts in the first half of 2025.

Holding the Presidency of the Council of the EU is a national task, and our close cooperation with the parliamentary parties in this context is of utmost importance.

During today's meeting, I had the opportunity to brief Mr. Perdikis on the progress of the preparations, which are proceeding at an intensive pace by the Secretariat of the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the EU, in close cooperation with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr. Constantinos Kombos, and all Ministries and Deputy Ministries.

I have informed that consultations to define the programme of the Trio Presidency, together with our partners Poland and Denmark, are at an advanced stage. In this context, the Republic of Cyprus has highlighted a number of important issues, such as social Europe, the effective management of the migration issue, with emphasis on foreign policy, as well as the EU's relations with the countries of the Middle East and the Gulf countries.

Of particular importance, of course, are the issues of climate change management and the green transition, which are high on the EU's agenda. Our aim in our Presidency is also to highlight these issues in a way that has a positive social impact. These are issues that we want to emphasise through initiatives and policies. I refer to the recent example of the initiative of the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment to tackle water scarcity and the policies to support the primary sector.

In conclusion, I would like to thank Mr Perdikis again for a very useful exchange of views. We will work closely together to ensure our goal, which is none other than a successful and ambitious Presidency, even more successful than in 2012, as we are now a mature Member State that will leave a positive footprint in the EU. In a changing EU and a changing Cyprus."
