The Deputy Minister for European Affairs, Ms Marilena Raouna, met today with the European Commissioner for the Environment, Oceans and Fisheries, Mr. Virginijus Sinkevičius, who is visiting Cyprus.
During the meeting, the Deputy Minister congratulated the European Commissioner for his work and the ambitious environmental goals achieved during his term of office. She assured that the Government will continue to support the Commission's legislative initiatives in the field of environment. For his part, the European Commissioner thanked Cyprus for its attitude and support during his term of office on difficult issues.
In the light of the establishment of a new College of Commissioners after the European elections, possible new priorities falling under the portfolio of the Commissioner for Environment, Oceans and Fisheries, such as the implementation of the European Green Deal, energy transition, climate change issues and water scarcity, were discussed.
In addition, an exchange of views took place on priority issues on the European agenda, such as migration and the enlargement process. In this context, the Deputy Minister also informed about the sharp increase in illegal migration flows to Cyprus by sea and the efforts made by the Government to address the issue in cooperation with the European Union (EU).
Ms Raouna also informed about the preparations and planning in view of the assumption by the Republic of Cyprus of the Presidency of the Council of the EU.
