[PIO] Meeting of Mr. Nikos Tornaritis with the President of the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of the Council of Europe Mr. Marc Cools

On the margins of the First Part of the 2024 Session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), the head of the Cypriot delegation to the PACE, Mr. Mr. Nicos Tornaritis had yesterday a private meeting with the President of the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of the Council of Europe Mr. Marc Cools and former Rapporteur for the evaluation of Cyprus in relation to the implementation of the Council of Europe Charter of Local Self-Government.

During the meeting, views were exchanged on issues related to its competences and the work carried out by the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities, as an institution of the Council of Europe, and ways to strengthen the cooperation of the Congress with Member States and national parliaments were discussed.

Mr. Tornaritis also referred to the importance of the House of Representatives' vote on the reform of local self-government in Cyprus, particularly with regard to the strengthening of the administrative and economic viability and autonomy of municipalities and the expansion of their role and responsibilities, for the benefit of the quality of life of citizens. For his part, Mr. Cools referred to the constructive cooperation that Congress is developing with relevant bodies in Cyprus, noting that the country benefits greatly from the experience and expertise of Congress.

They also exchanged views on the situation in Cyprus and the prospects for the resolution of the Cyprus problem and Mr. Tornaritis expressed concern about Turkey's illegal practices in the occupied territories, particularly in the enclosed area of Famagusta.
