As part of the implementation of policies aimed at enhancing safety in the aquatic environment and preventing drownings and maritime accidents, an Action Plan has been drawn up and approved by the Council of Ministers.

The Action Plan includes interventions such as the operation of an information system for controls and inspections, an accident observatory, an educational programme on safety in the aquatic environment, a safe swimming programme for children up to twelve years of age, an information campaign for the elderly, the establishment of a national drowning prevention day, the modernisation of the legislative framework and regulations and related information for citizens through a special application. Furthermore, it was decided to establish a Committee under the supervision of the Deputy Minister to the President to monitor the progress of the implementation of the Action Plan and any enrichment with additional actions.

The implementation of the interventions envisaged in the Action Plan is expected to start in May 2024 and to be completed in their entirety by July 2024. By completing all the interventions within the timeframes set out in the Action Plan, the aim is that they will become continuous actions.

Within this framework, today the Deputy Minister will have a meeting with representatives of the non-profit organization "Safe Water Sports" regarding the conclusion of a Memorandum of Understanding and a briefing on the relevant initiatives and the set of actions and good practices already implemented in Greece on a pro bono basis.
