The updating of the Memorandum of Cooperation concluded between the Legal Service of the Republic of Cyprus and the University of Cyprus in November 2012, was among the issues of mutual interest discussed at today's meeting between the Attorney General of the Republic Mr. George Savvidis and the Rector of the University of Cyprus, Professor Tasos Christofides. The meeting was also attended by Dr. Kostas Paraskeva, Associate Professor of Public Law and Chairman of the University's Department of Law. This was followed by a lecture by the Attorney General of the Republic, who, accepting the invitation of Dr Paraskevas, presented to students of the Law Faculty of the University the topic "The role of the Attorney General in the Cypriot legal order", which is part of the curriculum of the students.
Explaining the role, powers and duties of the Attorney General of the Republic, as derived from the Constitution, and the key constitutional role that the institution plays in the exercise of the powers of the Executive, the Legislative and the Judiciary, the Head of the Legal Service referred to and analysed with concrete examples the multifaceted and complex work carried out by the specialised Sections of the Legal Service, in the context of the performance of the Attorney General's duties as legal adviser to the Executive.
With regard to criminal prosecutions, Mr. Savvides explained to the students the Articles of the Constitution from which derives the power of the institution of the Attorney General at his discretion in the public interest to initiate or discontinue any criminal proceedings or to order the prosecution of any person in the Republic, which has been firmly established through the decisions of the Supreme Court.
In his lecture, Mr Savvidis also referred to cases handled by the Legal Service before the European Court of Human Rights, the contribution of the Legal Service to the control of contracts for the execution of large public utility projects, the representation of the Republic in legal proceedings brought by and against the State in connection with disputes in the sphere of private law, the handling by the Legal Service of appeals against the administration, the handling of cases before the courts of law, the representation of the Republic in legal proceedings brought by and against the State in connection with disputes in the sphere of private law, the handling by the Legal Service of appeals against the administration, the handling of cases before the courts of law, the representation of the Republic in legal proceedings against the State in connection with disputes in the sphere of public utility projects, the representation of the Republic in legal proceedings brought by and against the State in connection with disputes in the sphere of private law, the handling of cases before the courts of law in connection with the execution of public utility projects.
