The Minister of Labour and Social Insurance, Mr. Yannis Panagiotou said the following regarding the approval by the plenary session of the House of Representatives of the Government's bill on increasing the duration of leave and the payment of maternity allowance:
"I welcome the decision of the Plenum of the House of Representatives to unanimously vote in favour of the Government's Bill to increase maternity leave from 18 to 22 weeks, as provided for in the President's Governance Programme and implemented with the cooperation of the political forces and social partners.
Strengthening support for working parents is a policy priority of the Ministry of Labour and Social Insurance, and enabling new working mothers to spend an additional month at the side of their newborn children is indicative of the people-centred policy implemented by the Government.
The increase in maternity leave to five and a half months is being implemented immediately and can be taken up by around 5,000 women a year, which includes new mothers who have recently had a child and have not yet returned to work."
