The great importance of COP27 in implementing decisions to tackle Climate Change was underlined today by the President of the Republic Mr.Nicos Anastasiades, in his intervention during the COP27 Summit in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt.

Speaking at the Summit, President Anastasiades said, among other things, that many scientific studies, including the recent one by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, send a clear message that only a dramatic reduction in carbon monoxide pollutants can help avert an environmental disaster from rising temperatures, stressing that we must act collectively, decisively and urgently to prevent worse impacts.

He added that "Cyprus is a Mediterranean island located in a region that is already experiencing the effects of climate change with prolonged periods of drought, increased temperatures endangering our forests and ecosystems and affecting people's daily lives."

He pointed out that the Government of Cyprus has already been implementing the National Adaptation Strategy since 2017 and is in the process of updating it to better address the multiple, complex and interlinked risks and impacts of climate change.

"Despite the small size of our country and the small percentage of pollutant emissions, we are nevertheless determined to contribute to the reduction of carbon monoxide pollutants," the President said.

He also pointed out that Cyprus has committed within the EU to reduce greenhouse pollutants by at least 55% by 2030.

He also noted that at the national level Cyprus has revised its national policies to make them more appropriate to meet the targets set by 2030 and has started implementing its long-term climate neutrality strategy until 2050.

President Anastasiades also said that in recognition of the significant impact of climate change, particularly in our region, we have developed the initiative to address climate change in the Eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East, which led to the development of the regional action plan on policies and measures based on scientific findings.
