Health Minister Dr.Popee Kanari presented today the developments concerning the General Health Insurance Scheme during her intervention at the High Level Meeting of the World Health Organization, on the occasion of the 15th anniversary of the establishment of the Tallinn Charter. The meeting is organised by the WHO Europe, the Estonian Ministry of Social Affairs and the European Observatory on Health Systems and Policies.
Dr Kanari said that after decades of discussions and consultations, Cyprus implemented the General Health System on 1 June 2019. She stressed that it is one of the biggest social reforms implemented in the Republic of Cyprus.
"It is a fully functional, modern, people-centred health system, the main objective of which is to provide quality health care services to beneficiaries", she added.
Dr Kanari added that numbers never lie and in this case they demonstrate the success of the General Health System. She said that during the fourth year of operation of the GESY, there were 943,978 registered beneficiaries, close to 100% of the population of Cyprus. He provided detailed data as follows.300 have undergone laboratory tests
- 299,900 have visited imaging centers
- 286,500 have visited dentists
- 90.500 surgeries
The numbers, the Minister stressed, indicate the confidence of patients, health professionals and health service providers in the Cyprus General Health System
She made it clear that the progress of the GHS highlights the need for supervision, corrections and the introduction of quality criteria. Reforms are also needed, through legislation, which will contribute to its further improvement, as the health sector is dynamic and evolving.
"Cyprus is committed to respond to the changing needs of the population taking into account ageing, environmental factors, health promotion, disease prevention, treatment, rehabilitation and palliative care," he noted.
In conclusion, Dr Kanari pointed out that to meet the challenges of the ever-changing dynamic public health sector, we need an equally dynamic General Health System based on trust, which will be, under constant transformation.
