The Office of the Environment Commissioner participated with the Environmental Management Officer Mr.Haris Nikolaidis in the meeting of the Parliamentary Committee on Environment, on 31/01/2024, which focused on the modernization of the basic legislation and provisions of the "Water Pollution Control (Amendment) Law of 2023" and in particular the provisions relating to the permitting, auditing and inspection system.
The Office of the Environment Commissioner considers that it is important that the Bill be passed immediately so as to provide the Department of Environment with the ability to speed up environmental permitting and the tools to conduct quick and efficient inspections for more effective implementation of the legislation.
During the session, the Officer of the Office of the Environment Commissioner indicated that provision should be ensured in the Bill, m Further, for this purpose and for as long as the transition period lasts, the Office of the Environment Commissioner has made a proposal for the establishment of a special unit within the competencies of the Ministry of Interior (Department of Town and Country Planning, District Administration) to enable unlicensed farmers to process their licence applications quickly. The same should apply to tenants of Turkish Cypriot land.
The aim of the Office of the Environment Commissioner is to protect the environment and at the same time apply the law in the most effective and fair way.
