In the framework of the work of the Fourth Part of the 2023 Session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), Ms Christiana Erotokritou participated yesterday in a debate on the escalating tension in the Middle East as a result of the recent Hamas attack on Israel.

Ms Erotokritou condemned the atrocious attack by the terrorist organisation Hamas against the State of Israel and its citizens, stressing Israel's right to self-defence. The actions of Hamas constitute war crimes, she stressed, and the result of the prevalence and violent imposition of radical Islam in the Gaza Strip.

The Cypriot MP referred to the undermining by some countries of the Avraham Agreement and the prospect of normalising Israel's relations with neighbouring Arab countries aimed at building conditions of security, stability and prosperity in the region. These same countries, he added, are the ones which, by promoting anti-Semitism and sowing extreme religious fundamentalism to serve their own interests, have supported and provided all kinds of assistance to Hamas to enable it to carry out such heinous acts today.

It is a collective and individual obligation of the member states of the Council of Europe, he stressed, to stop and combat violence, anti-Semitism, radicalisation and terrorism. There can be no tolerance and no consequences for the heinous actions of Hamas, which violate fundamental principles and values of the civilised world.
