The work of the 4th part of the 2023 session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) started today in Strasbourg. The head of the Cypriot delegation, Mr. Nikos Tornaritis, participated in a plenary debate on the conclusions of the CSCE mission to monitor the parliamentary elections in Montenegro, which took place on 11 June 2023.

Mr. Tornaritis said that the latest electoral processes for the election of a new President and a new Parliament demonstrated Montenegro's commitment to further strengthening democratic institutions and ensuring economic and social stability in the country.

In his capacity as the CSE Rapporteur on the fulfilment of Montenegro's obligations and commitments towards the Council of Europe, Mr. Tornaritis stressed the importance of addressing the weaknesses and dysfunctions included in the Conclusions of the CSE Ad Hoc Committee regarding the electoral process, as well as the more general recommendations of the CSE to bring the country in line with the Council of Europe acquis. It expressed the view that, with the implementation of the necessary reforms, Montenegro would soon be in a position to leave the monitoring and surveillance process of the Organisation and to move forward on its European course with full respect for democracy, the rule of law and human rights.
