The Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Foreign and European Affairs, Mr. Charis Georgiades, participated today, Friday, 14 January 2022, via internet, in the Meeting of the Chairs of the European Affairs Committees of the Parliaments of the Member States of the European Union (COSAC), which took place in the framework of the parliamentary dimension of the current French Presidency of the Council of the European Union (EU).
In his intervention during the discussion of the priorities of the French Presidency, Mr Georgiades referred to the objective of building a strong and sovereign EU in the world, which, he stressed, requires the EU to speak with a single voice on the international scene and its actions to be concrete and credible.
Mr Georgiades criticised the instrumentalisation of migration by Belarus and Turkey. This issue, Georgiades said, is particularly important for Cyprus, which receives the largest number of asylum seekers in proportion to its population among EU Member States. It is therefore imperative, Georgiades stressed, that Member States reach an agreement as soon as possible on the new Pact on Immigration and Asylum, which promotes unity, solidarity and the principles and values of the EU.
