The European Parliament Week, co-organised by the European Parliament (EP) and the current Belgian Presidency of the Council of the European Union (EU), concluded today in Brussels.
The second plenary session focused on the future of the single market and EU taxation. The MEP Mr. Chrisis Pantelidis, Member of the Parliamentary Committee on Foreign and European Affairs, made the following intervention:
"From a political point of view, any tax policy - single or national - must be:
[*]FAIR. The term 'fair' includes 'fair for all citizens', but - in the case of the European common market - 'fair for all EU countries, especially the small ones, which, because of their size, have limited possibilities or options'. [*] EFFECTIVE. That is to say, encouraging growth, improving the competitiveness of our businesses, but also strengthening the public purse. [*]SIMPLE. So that it is understandable and easy to implement in order to NOT inconvenience the taxpayers and the professional sectors involved in the matter and to leave NO room for tax evasion or other fraud.
Above all, however, any tax policy must HAVE A NAME. And to make sense, it must be COMPETITIVE, i.e. it must respect European taxpayers - citizens and businesses - so that they find that by paying taxes they are 'buying' defence and security, 'buying' global influence, 'buying' a clean environment, 'buying' public infrastructure, 'buying' health services, 'buying' high quality education, 'buying' digital access for all without exception, 'buying' a better quality of life.
