In the framework of the 22nd Winter Meeting of the C.S. OSCE, MP Christos Senekis participated in a discussion in the General Committee on Economic Affairs, Science, Technology and Environment on the challenges and prospects for affordable, secure, clean and sustainable energy in the wider OSCE region.
Senekis noted that the ongoing war in Ukraine seriously undermines economic and environmental security. The Cypriot MP said that high inflation and rising prices of various necessities have particularly affected low-income households. In particular, he added, the price of basic agricultural products, such as cereals, remains critical for global food security and, therefore, their exports from Ukraine must continue unhindered. He expressed disappointment that Cyprus could not participate in the Black Sea Initiative because of the restrictive measures imposed by Turkey on Cypriot ships.
Mr.Senekis pointed out the blow to the Cypriot tourism sector due to the sanctions imposed on Russia, stressing that joint decisions on sanctions should be accompanied by measures to mitigate their impact.
Referring to the issue of energy security, Mr.Senekis stressed the need to accelerate the green transition.
Referring to the issue of energy security, Mr.Senekis stressed the need to accelerate the green transition. He noted that the Republic of Cyprus is working in this direction, proceeding with the construction of important projects, such as the EuroAsia Interconnector, for the transmission to continental Europe of electricity produced from renewable sources and that Cyprus can be a reliable alternative energy hub for the transport of natural gas to Europe.
Finally, on the occasion of the devastating earthquakes that hit Turkey and Syria, leaving behind thousands of dead and homeless people, Mr. Senekis noted that Cyprus is participating in the universal wave of support by sending humanitarian aid to those affected. At the same time, Senekis said, there is growing concern about the nuclear power plant under construction in the earthquake-prone area of Akkouyos, very close to the epicentre of the earthquake and opposite Cyprus, stressing the urgent need to re-evaluate the construction of the plant, which poses a direct threat to the entire region.
