In the framework of the second part of the 2024 session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), MP Christiana Erotokritou participated in a plenary debate on the issue of Albania's compliance with its obligations and commitments towards the Council of Europe.

Ms Erotokritou pointed out that Albania continues to show significant shortcomings in the implementation of the acquis of the Organization, especially with regard to the fundamental human right to freedom of expression and information. Referring to the deteriorating media environment, the increase in SLAPPs, threats and attacks against journalists by organised crime and the police, Ms Erotokritou pointed out that this deteriorating situation has not been effectively addressed by the Albanian authorities, who have failed to protect journalists from interference and harassment that endanger their lives and integrity.

The Cypriot MEP further noted the continuous undermining of the protection of the rights of minorities, and referred to the case of the elected Mayor of Himarra, Mr. Fredi Belleri, of Greek origin, who is in prison as a result of fabricated and politically motivated accusations. Corruption, he pointed out, and the links between financial and political interests and organised crime are also issues that endanger the proper functioning of democratic institutions. It would be a mistake, Erotokritou pointed out, for the country to go through the surveillance process without first recording sufficient progress on all the aforementioned issues. The commitment of all Council of Europe member states to the principles and values of the Organization must be unwavering, she concluded.
