The work of the Inter-Parliamentary Union Parliamentary Meeting of the 28th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Convention on Climate Change (COP28) concluded in Dubai.

The MEP Alexandra Attalidou, in her intervention during the debate on "Bridging the Gap: Promoting climate change adaptation policies for vulnerable communities", pointed out that the impacts of climate change know no borders and are particularly felt in vulnerable communities, which have contributed least to the global carbon footprint. The Cypriot MEP stressed the importance of recognising the disproportionate impacts of climate change suffered by vulnerable communities and empowering them with the necessary resources and tools to adapt to climate change in the face of even greater climate challenges. Promoting a holistic approach and finding innovative solutions to climate action, Attalidou stressed, requires cooperation between governments, the private sector, non-governmental organizations and civil society.

Attalidou expressed concern about the results of the first Global Assessment, which examines progress made in implementing the goals of the Paris Agreement. Governments, she stressed, must be held accountable for implementing the results of the assessment, which demonstrates the need to strengthen efforts to achieve the targets agreed in Paris in 2015. In this regard, she pointed out that funding for developing countries and vulnerable communities to address climate emergencies is insufficient and that additional measures must be taken to maximize Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), including appropriately designed and By recognising inequalities and taking concerted action in the exercise of our legislative and supervisory responsibilities, we can help build a fairer and more sustainable future for all, he concluded.
