In the framework of the European Conference of Speakers of the Parliaments of the Member States of the Council of Europe in Dublin, a meeting of the Secretaries General of the national parliaments was held, in which the Director General of the House of Representatives, Ms Tasoula Hieronymidou, participated.
The meeting discussed, inter alia, the regulatory framework governing the functioning of members of parliaments in the performance of their duties. In her intervention, the Director General of the House of Representatives referred to the institutional framework in force in the House of Representatives, which stems both from the implementation of the relevant legislation and from internal rules for the operation of the House, based both on the Rules of Procedure of the House and the adoption of the Code of Principles and Rules of Conduct and Transparency for Members of the House of Representatives, the Code of Ethics and Transparency for Members of the House of Representatives, the Code of Ethics and the regulation of the relations of members of the House with interest groups.
As Ms Ieronymidou said, the House of Representatives makes continuous efforts to ensure that society's demand for greater transparency and accountability is reflected in the performance of the duties of the Members of the House, thus contributing to the strengthening of citizens' trust in the institution of Parliament and the commitment of the Members of the House to observe the rules of parliamentary ethics and to perform their duties with impartiality, selflessness and mutual respect.
The Director-General of Parliament also stressed that inappropriate behaviour, conflict of interest and serving selfish interests at the expense of the public interest are detrimental to the authority, credibility and the institution of Parliament itself. Finally, he assured that the House of Representatives at the political and administrative level, as a constitutional authority, makes every effort to safeguard the democratic and free functioning of Parliament.
