Four productions make up this year's programme of the "International Festival of Ancient Greek Drama" co-organised by the Ministry of Culture, the Cyprus Centre of the International Theatre Institute and the Ministry of Tourism.
The 27th edition of the "International Festival of Ancient Greek Drama" will take place from 19 July to 10 August 2024 at the Ancient Odeon of Paphos, the Makarios III Amphitheatre (School for the Blind) and the Ancient Theatre of Kourion, hosting productions of contemporary aesthetics and artistic approach to ancient Greek drama.
This year's productions are the following. The Romanian production, which is the opening production of this year's event, will be presented at the Ancient Conservatory of Paphos on 19 July and at the Makarios III Amphitheatre (School for the Blind) on 21 July. The production of the KTHBE, which presents in an imaginative way the satire of the comic poet on the human dream of wealth, will be presented at the Ancient Theatre of Kourion, for two performances, on 26 and 27 July.
The internationally acclaimed Greek director and teacher, Theodoros Terzopoulos, collaborates for the first time with the National Theatre of Greece and directs Aeschylus' Oresteia, the only surviving trilogy of ancient drama, in a single performance and with a superb cast of 32 actors on stage. Through his famous method, the great master of theatre, the great master of theatre, presents another exquisite staging proposal, an unprecedented cultural event, an emblematic performance of intellectual and philosophical depth, which comes to expand the boundaries of art. The production of the National Theatre of Greece, Oresteia, will be presented for two performances at the Ancient Theatre of Kourion on August 2 and 3.
This year's Festival hosts, for the first time, the second summer production of the National Theatre of Greece, Euripides' Bacchae, directed by Thanos Papakonstantinou. With a cast of major actors and actors, a strong company of 20 actors and three musicians on stage, the director penetrates the mystical and ecstatic universe of Euripides' play and presents another interesting approach to this Euripidean tragedy. The production of the National Theatre of Greece, Bacchae, will be presented for two performances at the Ancient Theatre of Curium on 9 and 10 August.

The aim and wish of the organizers, for one more year, is to continue the upward and successful course of the "International Festival of Ancient Greek Drama", aiming at the upgrading and cultivation of theatrical education, the access of Cypriot audiences and foreign visitors to the performances, as well as the contribution of the Festival to the cultural tourism of our country.
A total of 35 proposals from theatre organizations and artists from 17 countries were submitted for participation in this year's event. The seven-member Selection Committee, which studied and evaluated the proposals that were submitted and met the criteria for participation in the Festival, formulated a diverse programme, with particular emphasis on quality.
Selection Committee
The seven-member Selection Committee for this year's performances consisted of a representative of the Department of Contemporary Culture of the Ministry of Culture: Georgia Hoplarou, Cultural Officer A', Chairperson of the Committee, two representatives of the Cyprus Centre for International Theatre Institute (CCIITH): Maria Sokratous, Tourism Officer A' and three Aristide members: Elena Katsouri, Stage Designer, Antonis K. Petridis, Associate Professor at the "Studies in Greek Culture" Programme of the Open University of Cyprus and Antonis Tsakmakis, Associate Professor at the Department of Classical Studies and Philosophy of the University of Cyprus.
