On Thursday 21 March 2024, the integration ceremony of the Drainage Councils of Idali, Pera Choriou and Nisos into the Nicosia Drainage Council (LDC) took place. The ceremony took place in the hall of the Pera Choriou Community Council.
In his address, Minister of Interior Mr. Constantinos Ioannou said that the ceremony is another important step towards the implementation of the major reform of the Local Government. The integration of the Drainage Councils of Idali and Pera Chorion-Nisos into the Nicosia Drainage Council and from July 1 into the new Nicosia District Local Government Organisation, is expected to bring multiple benefits for the citizens of the new South Nicosia-Idali Municipality.
In his address, the Mayor of Nicosia and President of the Nicosia Drainage Council, Mr. Constantinos Yiorkatzis said that with the inclusion of these areas within the boundaries of the Nicosia Drainage Board area, the countdown begins for the study, design and construction of the drainage systems and their connection to the existing Wastewater Treatment Plant of the Sewage Treatment Plant in Vatheia Gonia. The Mayor of Nicosia said that the non-installation of sewerage systems in the Municipality of Idalios and the communities of Pera Chorio - Nissos is one of the many outstanding issues received by SSP in 2012 that need to be corrected and completed. He added that the integration, design and construction efforts began in 2007, but for various reasons were delayed. They were so delayed that after the problems experienced at the Dali and Pera Chorio - Nissou Biological Treatment Plant, the decision was made in 2013 to receive the wastewater at the Sewage Treatment Plant at Vathia Gonia, even though Dali, Pera Chorio and Nissou had not officially joined the SSP. The Nicosia Drainage Board took this decision for the public good, based on the quality of life and the health of the residents of the area.
Finally, Mr. Yiorkatzis added that the decision in 2013 to receive the wastewater of Idali, Pera Chorio and Nissos to the Sewage Treatment Plant in Vatheia Gonia, without the official inclusion of these areas in the Sewage Treatment Plant, is typical of how Local Authorities should operate.
The Mayor of Idali, Mr. Leontios Kallenos, the Prefect of Nicosia Mr. Andreas Hadjipakkos and the Mayor of Pera Chorio Mr. Giannakis Georgiou in their interventions thanked the Minister of Interior and expressed their pleasure and satisfaction for the completion of the process of integration of the Drainage Councils of Idali, Pera Chorio and Nissos into the Nicosia Drainage Council. Moreover, they referred both to the excellent cooperation between them and their constructive collaboration with the Nicosia Drainage Board.
