The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mrs. Anita Demetriou, hosted today, Tuesday, 8 March 2022, a breakfast in the framework of the International Women's Day in the atrium of the House of Representatives. The breakfast was attended by former and current women councillors, parliamentary editors, parliamentary assistants, staff of the House of Representatives and nine young girls from all provinces of Cyprus.
Ms Demetriou thanked the guests for their support and for the valuable contribution of each of them individually. "For us today is not a day to celebrate but a day to remind us how much we still have to do. And we can only succeed in this when we move forward with partnerships. The contribution of each of you is very important if we are to be able to change mindsets and get rid of stereotypes." Ms Demetriou also pointed out that the struggle for equality is not a personal matter, but concerns the whole society.
In the footsteps of a woman councillor
Addressing the nine girls who came from all the provinces of Cyprus to follow the footsteps and daily life of a woman councillor, the Speaker of the Parliament called them our hope for the future. "We have to motivate this new generation through our own behaviour and course, so that they can have their own voice."
In closing, he also referred to the critical moments that humanity is going through these days with the wish that peace be restored as soon as possible and that all of us feel safe again.
