The Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports and Youth (MPEAN) in response to the request expressed during the Minister's appearance yesterday before the Committee on Education and Culture of the House of Representatives announces data on teacher absences from public schools.
On Friday 18 February 2022, 1218 teachers (Secondary, Technical, Teachers, Kindergarten, Special Education) were absent from Public Schools. Of these:
557 teachers were absent because they are confirmed coronavirus cases.
[II] 101 teachers were absent because they are classified as close contacts of confirmed coronavirus cases.
(iii) 232 teachers were absent for caring for children who are confirmed coronavirus cases or have been identified as close contacts of confirmed coronavirus cases and who are under 15 years of age.
(iv) 513 teachers were absent for any other reason/illness.
The Ministry of Education continues its daily efforts to ensure the smooth operation of schools in the midst of a pandemic and to address the need to replace teachers who are absent.
However, it is clear from the above figures that a number of teachers could be in school if they made use, either for themselves or for their children, of the "retention test" procedure concerning contacts.
In the context of the dialogue and cooperation that has been developed, the Ministry of Education is, once again, appealing to educational organisations to use their influence to ensure that teachers who identify themselves as close contacts or who have children to keep at home who are close contacts use the opportunity provided by the antigen tests for contacts, so that schools are not burdened with avoidable absences. In this way, they will also support their colleagues who continue to serve in the school.
The Ministry of Education reiterates that such a contribution by the teachers' organizations themselves will also assist the additional facilities implemented by the Ministry to facilitate the process of substitutions in schools.
