The Consumer Protection Service of the Ministry of Energy, Trade and Industry and the Health Services of the Medical and Public Health Services of the Ministry of Health inform the consumer public that it has been observed that food products (confectionery, catering items, honey, jams, spoon sweets, olive oil, etc.etc.) produced in establishments not controlled by the competent authorities, through personal or commercial profiles, on social media such as Facebook and Instagram, or through websites.
Consumers are therefore advised to be careful when buying food online. They should confirm that they come from businesses registered in the register kept by the Health Services by asking for their certificate of registration. They should also check the labelling of the product before making a purchase, as legislation requires the producer to comply with the relevant food labelling legislation. Indicatively: name of the food, list of ingredients, list of allergens, name and address of the manufacturer, etc. This information must be available to the consumer before the purchase is made.
It should be noted that the sale of food, which is not produced in licensed/approved laboratories or food premises, involves various risks related to food quality and safety.
Finally, if consumers identify an unlicensed establishment selling food on social media and/or websites, they are invited to inform the Health Services of the Ministry of Health or contact the Consumer Line at 1429.
