The inauguration of the Larnaca Day Centre of the Pancyprian Association for People with Autism was held on Monday, June 3, 2024, by the Deputy Minister of Social Welfare Ms Marilena Evangellou.
In her address, Ms Evangellou highlighted the benefits of the operation of the Day Centres with the support of the Social Welfare Services of the Ministry of Social Welfare, which are achieved through the multidisciplinary and multidisciplinary framework, from which integration, socialisation, avoidance of exclusion and greater independence are promoted.
Noting the importance of the first National Strategy and National Action Plan for Autism, which was only recently approved by the Council of Ministers, he said that specific timelines had been set to respond to the specific needs and challenges of people with autism and their families.
As he said, "for the first time, all objectives, actions and policies on Autism from all relevant Ministries and Deputy Ministries are brought together under one umbrella, with continuous monitoring and supervision, involving in the whole process from the beginning and continuously, within the National Commission for Autism, the stakeholders themselves." Ms Evangelou referred to the first two actions under the National Strategy, concerning the creation of the National Electronic Platform for Autism, as well as the organization of the first National Conference on Autism.
The Deputy Minister of Social Welfare underlined the importance of the operation of residences and support programmes in independent living for adults with autism, under the supervision of the Department of Social Integration of Persons with Disabilities of the Ministry of Social Welfare, as well as the crucial role of the Family Intervention and Support Centre for Autism for preschool children from the first day of diagnosis.
