The Ambassador of Cyprus to Slovakia Mr. Stefan Rosina, inaugurated on 9 November the Honorary Consulate in Banská Bystrica, central Slovakia.
The ceremony was attended by the Speaker of the Slovak Parliament Mr. Mr. Peter Pellegrini, President of the Parliament of the Slovak Republic, Mr. Richard Raši, Minister of Investment, Regional Development and Information, Mr. Ondrej Lunter, Regional Governor, Mr. Ján Nosko, Mayor, Mr. Tomáš Kozák, Director General for European Affairs, and representatives of the local academic and business community. Former Slovak President Ivan Gašparovič and former Foreign Minister Ján Kubiš were guests of honour. The event was also attended by the Honorary Consul of Slovakia in Limassol Mr. Angelos Grigoriadis and the President of the Cyprus Hydrogen Association Mr. Makis Ketonis.
In his address, the Speaker of the Parliament Mr. J.J. Gašparovič and the President of the Slovak Republic Mr. J.J.P. Jansparovič attended the event. Pellegrini welcomed the decision of the Republic of Cyprus to open an Honorary Consulate in the city, expressing confidence that the new Honorary Consul of Cyprus, Mr. Rosina, with the respect he enjoys and the energy that characterizes him, will contribute substantially to the further development of the already excellent relations between Cyprus and Slovakia.
Former President Gašparovič, after referring to the close ties of friendship and mutual understanding between the two countries, stressed that the ongoing division of Cyprus is something that hurts him personally and wished for the reunification of the country as soon as possible.
In his own greeting, Ambassador Karagiorgis said, among other things, that the decision to open an Honorary Consulate in the historic town of Banská Bystrica demonstrates in practice our will to work to further strengthen the already excellent relations between Cyprus and Slovakia. We expect, he said, that the Consulate will actively contribute, particularly in the Central and Eastern Slovak region, to promoting cooperation in areas such as tourism, business, education and culture. Finally, he thanked the Slovak officials for their presence as well as for Slovakia's multifaceted support for the struggle for the reunification of our homeland, for example through the Slovak delegation's long-standing participation in the United Nations peacekeeping force in Cyprus.
