Important contacts were held yesterday, Tuesday, January 23rd, in Brussels by the Deputy Minister of Tourism Mr. Kostas Koumis. Specifically, Mr Koumis met with the heads of tourism organisations that organise programmes to our country, where they exchanged views on the final results of the previous year, as well as on the prospects for the new year, which are expected to be positive.
More specifically, the discussions focused on the possible increase in airline seats to our country and on the programmes that the organisers themselves intend to promote.
During his visit to Belgium, the Deputy Minister also had an important meeting with the Minister of Public Administration for Tourism-Cultural Heritage and Road Safety, Mrs Valérie De Bue. The two Ministers exchanged views on the importance and contribution of tourism at European level, the need to place particular emphasis on the green transition, digital transformation and the challenges that destination countries such as Cyprus are expected to face, taking into account the developments in air transport as they are now shaped in the context of Fit for 55.
It is worth mentioning that Belgium has been in charge of the European Presidency since 1 January, a responsibility which our country will hold for the first half of the year. I believe that at the moment the conditions are right for the Belgian market to grow, taking into account that there will be an increase in the number of flights from Brussels to our country.
It is certainly a very interesting market, in which we need visibility, but also more constant communication with the market leaders. Let us not forget that in Brussels there is also a large international community of workers, and I am essentially referring to the people who work in the European institutions.
With regard to the meeting with Mrs De Bue, I think that we had a very constructive meeting, during which we discussed both the current challenges facing tourism at European level and the plans and intentions of the Belgian Presidency. The mere fact that the Belgian Republic is currently holding the European Presidency, and the fact that two years from now this will be our responsibility and competence, underlines the need for closer relations. Undoubtedly, the consolidation of relations of cooperation and trust with our European partners can be extremely beneficial for tourism as well."
