In the framework of the implementation of the Chemical Substances Legislation, the Labour Inspection Department of the Ministry of Labour, Welfare and Social Insurance carried out random checks on plastic products available in the Cypriot market, in order to verify their content of hazardous chemicals and in particular Phthalic Esters.
Following laboratory analysis of the samples carried out by the State General Chemistry Department, it was found that in the products shown in the table, Phthalic Esters were detected in concentrations higher than the maximum limit allowed by the legislation.
Phthalic Esters are substances classified as toxic for reproduction and are included in the restrictions of Annex XVII of the REACH Regulation (points 51 and 52). According to these restrictions, plastic articles containing certain Phthalic Esters in concentrations higher than 0.1% by weight in a plasticised material must not be placed on the market.
The Labour Inspectorate informs the consumer public that it has already started the process of immediate withdrawal of non-compliant products from the Cypriot market.
