The extraordinary meeting of the Bureau of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) concluded yesterday in Copenhagen.
In the context of a discussion on the financial management of the Assembly, amendments to the current financial regulations of the Assembly were adopted which provide for an annual performance audit of the International Secretariat to be conducted alongside the financial audit of the Assembly's finances. On the necessity of adopting these amendments, Ms Irene Charalambidou, Vice-President of the Assembly, had tabled an additional Resolution on the matter, which was adopted at the most recent Annual Session of the OSCE CSO.
In the context of a discussion on current geopolitical challenges and the OSCE PA's response, Ms. Charalambidou argued that the war in the Middle East, as well as the possibility of its further escalation and expansion, but also attacks by terrorist organisations and the impact on international trade are significant threats to security and stability in the OSCE region and should therefore be of concern to the Assembly.
In a discussion on matters relating to the Rules of Procedure of the Assembly, Ms Charalambidou referred to the importance of extending the term of office of the President of the Assembly to enable him to implement the programmatic positions he announces. She expressed her intention to soon table an amendment to this effect for consideration by the Subcommittee on the Rules of Procedure, of which she is a member.
Finally, views were exchanged on the need to strengthen cooperation with the OSCE executive structures, governance issues of the OSCE CSO, budgetary issues and other challenges facing the Assembly.
