The Speaker of the House of Representatives Mrs Anita Demetriou received today a delegation of the Cyprus Workers' Confederation (CEC) accompanied by the Confederal Secretary of the European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC) Mr Ludovic Voet. The delegation of the SEK consisted of the General Secretary Mr. Andreas Matsas, the Deputy General Secretary Mr. Michael Michael, the General Organiser Mr. Panikos Argyridis, the General Treasurer Mr. Savvas Koulas and the Secretary of International Relations Mr. Elissaios Michael.
During the meeting, which was absolutely constructive, Mr. Voet informed the President of the Parliament about the main points of the ETUC manifesto with particular reference to the impact of the economic and social crisis, the ongoing dialogue on the minimum wage and the extension of collective agreements, the proper regulation of the legislative framework on immigration and the need for the Member States of the European Union to move forward with the green and digital transition.
For her part, the President of the Parliament underlined the need for a vision and concrete initiatives on the part of the European Union in order to promote the necessary reforms to secure its future and strengthen its communication with its citizens. In addition, the President of the Parliament expressed the view that, alongside addressing the geopolitical crises in Europe and the Middle East, social cohesion and the handling of migratory flows is and must continue to be a priority at European and national level, in order to provide citizens with the assurance that their leaders have concrete proposals to solve the issues that concern them.
In conclusion, both sides noted the need to promote concrete initiatives and proposals at both European and international level to alleviate citizens' insecurity and to strengthen democracy and trust in the institutions.
