Intervention by Mr. George Loukaidis at the Plenary Session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe
on the threat of far-right ideology to democracy and human rights in Europe
In the context of the work of the Fourth Part of the 2023 Session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), MP Mr. George Loucaides participated yesterday in a debate in the plenary session of the House on the challenges of far-right ideology for democracy and human rights in Europe.
Referring to the rise of far-right ideology across the European continent and beyond, Mr Loucaides said that today the values and ideals built on the ruins and hundreds of victims left behind by fascism and the far-right are under threat. The significant popular support that the far-right is receiving today, he noted, requires the waging of an unrelenting war against the odious ideology of hatred, based on humanity, solidarity and the defence and protection of democracy, the rule of law and human rights.
As he said, the far right and fascism is not another voice in democracy, it is a voice against democracy. The answer, he pointed out, must be their political and social isolation and marginalisation at all levels in order to protect society as well as the vulnerable groups they target. The normalization of the far right, through any collaboration with it or adoption of its rhetoric, as is the case today, and the demonstration of tolerance towards institutional racism, the Cypriot MP warned, create fertile ground for its further strengthening and penetration. efforts should be directed towards eliminating the root causes that fuel the far right, namely widening inequalities, poverty, destitution, marginalisation and the inability of a large proportion of the population to have decent access to and enjoy basic human rights, such as the right to health, education and housing.
Finally, he referred to the urgent need to develop a common European strategy based on humanity and solidarity, part of which should be the revision of the Dublin Regulation so that the countries receiving migrants and refugees are not left alone with this responsibility. At the same time, he stressed the need to promote tolerance of diversity as well as inclusion policies for vulnerable groups, including migrants and refugees. Supporting the sustainable development of the countries of the Global South instead of the current bleeding of their rich resources also becomes imperative if we want to end human misery and the further intensification of migration flows.
