MP Nikos Tornaritis participated in a debate at the Plenary Session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe on the threat of far-right ideology and its impact on democracy and human rights in Europe.
In the framework of the work of the Fourth Part of the 2023 Session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), the head of the Cypriot delegation, MP Mr. Mr. Nikos Tornaritis participated in a debate at the plenary session of the House on the subject of far-right ideology and its impact on democracy and human rights.
Mr. Tornaritis said that the steady rise of far-right ideology is a pan-European phenomenon, which requires a clear and collective response. He also pointed out that this phenomenon is a consequence of the continuous deterioration of socio-economic conditions in Europe, due to the upward trend of inflation and the increase in interest rates and energy prices, as well as recent crises, such as the heinous Hamas attack on Israel, Azerbaijan's attack on Nagorno-Karabakh, Russia's invasion of Ukraine, but especially the migration and refugee crisis. On the migration issue, Mr.Tornaritis stressed that supporting frontline countries such as Cyprus and achieving a common system for managing migratory flows, based on the principle of solidarity and fair sharing of responsibilities, will help promote more open, democratic and tolerant societies, able to face and respond to the rise of xenophobia and discrimination.
Tornaritis also stressed that Member States should jointly adopt initiatives and action plans to better address and combat extremist elements also in the online space, in order to safeguard the rights of the most vulnerable groups in society who are constantly subjected to harassment, violence and discrimination. Member States should make it a priority to adopt or strengthen existing legislation to prevent and combat populism, extremism, hate speech, xenophobia and racism. Tornaritis stressed the importance of promoting inclusiveness and multiculturalism at all levels, in full compliance with the principles and values promoted by the Council of Europe.
