An honorary event of the House of Representatives dedicated to the poet Kyriakos Charalambidis took place on Wednesday, October 4, 2023, in the packed hall "Kasteliotissa" and in an atmosphere of deep emotion, one of the most prominent representatives of modern Greek poetry, in order to honour his timeless contribution to modern Greek literature and his homeland.
The event was addressed by the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mrs. Anita Demetriou, who awarded the poet with the Medal of the House of Representatives on behalf of the House of Representatives.
The poet's work and his timeless contribution to culture was presented by Professor of Modern Greek Literature Pantelis Voutouris, who placed Charalambides in the context of the wider Modern Greek poetry, by summarizing the basic features of his poetry, among which "the poetic depiction of the successive additions and the variety of the Greek language" in a unique way in relation to his contemporaries of Modern Greek writers. Professor Voutouris concluded his speech by pointing out that Kyriakos Charalambidis is being celebrated as a national poet, along the lines of Kostis Palamas and George Seferis.
In his response, the poet, offering his spiritual gifts, pointed out the poet's constant struggle within society, the homeland and universal culture as a "vessel of election", which "concerns both the art of speech and the art of politics, which also determines the art of love for the homeland and for ourselves and our neighbour". The poet then recited his poems.
The programme of the event also included a video screening of the song "The Wedding" (a setting of Kyriakos Charalambides' poem "At the crowns of his daughter" by the band "Rhodes of the Wind"), as well as a screening of excerpts from the documentary by Elias Demetriou Kyriakos Charalambides: A Greek poet (Paraskinio, ERT, 2007).
The event concluded in a spirit of devotion with a performance of the poet's verses set to music by the Choir of the Pancyprian Guild of Public Employees (PA.The event, which was open to the public, was attended by MPs, ministers, party representatives and other dignitaries, writers, literary critics and a select audience.
