Official visit of the Cyprus-Serbia Friendship Group to Belgrade

The two-day official visit of a delegation of the Cyprus-Serbia Friendship Group to the House of Representatives to Belgrade began today, at the invitation of the President of the Serbian-Cypriot Friendship Group in the Serbian National Assembly, Mr. Biljana Pantić Pilja. The delegation consists of the Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Foreign and European Affairs and Chairman of the Cyprus-Serbia Friendship Group Mr. Haris Georgiades (Head) and the Members of the Committee Mr. Marios Mavridis (Deputy Chairman), George Loukaidis, George Koukoumas and Christos Orphanides. The delegation was accompanied to the meetings by the Ambassador of the Republic of Cyprus in Belgrade Mr. Andreas Fotiou.

The delegation was received today by the President of the National Assembly of Serbia Dr. Vladimir Orlić and had separate meetings with the President of the Serbia-Cyprus Friendship Group Mr. Pantić Pilja and Members of the Friendship Group, President of the Foreign Affairs Committee Borko Stefanović and Vice President of the European Integration Committee Dubravka Filipovski and Members of both Committees.

In all the meetings, the fraternal relations between Cyprus and Serbia and their peoples were underlined, based on the long-standing historical ties between the two countries and their mutual support for each other on issues of major importance for each country.

The Cypriot MPs reaffirmed Cyprus' firm support for Serbia, on a principled basis, both on the Kosovo issue and on its accession path towards the European Union. The Cypriot delegation expressed its appreciation for Serbia's unchanging and long-standing principled stance on the Cyprus problem and underlined our side's commitment to the objective of resuming talks towards a solution in accordance with international law, relevant UN resolutions and European principles and values.

Serbian officials reaffirmed Serbia's principled position in favour of the independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Republic of Cyprus. They also underlined that Serbia's accession to the European Union is a strategic goal.

In the context of parliamentary diplomacy, they stressed the mutual willingness to intensify contacts and exchanges between the parliaments of the two countries at all levels and expressed joint readiness for further development of relations between them, especially in the fields of investment, tourism, education and culture.
