Event on Refugee Label

The House of Representatives, in collaboration with the Art Historian Maria Paphitis, is organizing an exhibition entitled "Refugee Label: A stamp for the refugees of Cyprus, the story of a symbol". The exhibition is under the patronage of the President of the Parliament, Mrs. Anita Demetriou, who will inaugurate the exhibition on Monday, 27 March, at 18.00, at the House of Citizens, Nicosia.

The well-known Refugee Stamp, an engraving by the renowned Greek engraver A. Tassos entitled Cyprus 1974, a painful symbol of the invasion and occupation, was introduced in September 1974 in order to support the Refugee Fund. At the same time, as it is affixed to everything that is mailed inside and outside Cyprus, it helps to inform the international community about the Cyprus problem.

The art exhibition captures the artistic process through which the Refugee Emblem was created, presents information about the work itself, highlights its impact on the artistic production of Cyprus, demonstrates the consequences of refugeeisation, regardless of time and place, and finally focuses on the enclosed city of Famagusta.

The art exhibition presents information about the work itself, highlights its impact on the artistic production of Cyprus, demonstrates the consequences of refugeeisation, regardless of time and place, and, finally, focuses on the enclosed city of Famagusta. The central work of the exhibition is accompanied by the relevant wood engraved plate and is flanked by important works by other artists exhibited for the first time, such as the work by Giorgos Skoteinos Horses of Famagusta, which represented Cyprus at the 1968 Venice Biennale, the Triptych of '74 The Flight I, a work from the collection of the Telemachos Kantho family, and the work by Lefteris Economou Thorns, Scenes and Refugees. In addition, contemporary artists (E. Theodotou, M. Theofilidis, A. Nikolaou, P. Pasantas, E. Sarri Varnava) created works especially for this exhibition.
