The report of the Ministry of Health for the first year of the government of President of the Republic Mr. Mr. Michalis Damianos, Minister of Health, presented today at a Press Conference.

Mr. Damianos said that the guiding principle for the formulation of policies concerning health issues is the protection and service of citizens. "What the Ministry of Health seeks is for every patient to receive quality care, the best possible care for their treatment," he noted.

Analyzing the Government's health policies, Damianos referred to the progress that has been made in various sectors of the health system, which, he said, has resulted in the provision of better quality health services to patients.

In particular, the Minister referred to upgrades in the services provided, such as the implementation last month of the plan to cover the costs of travel, accommodation and food for patients sent abroad for treatment and a session. "A long-standing request of patients, which has become a reality," the Health Minister said. He also mentioned the revision of the Infertility Treatment Subsidy Plan and the increase of the amount for the first IVF treatment from 2,500 to 3,500 thousand euros.

The Health Minister also mentioned that new health strategies are being prepared which include, among others, the management of Mental Health, transplants, the treatment of eating disorders and the improvement of quality of life through healthy diet and exercise. In addition, the updating of National Strategies for Diabetes and Rare Diseases is expected to contribute to improving prevention and quality of life of the population.

Regarding the pillar "modernisation of the legislative framework/new legislation", he noted that the Government continues to work on upgrading the legislative framework in order to ensure the effective functioning of health services. He referred to the re-consultation with all stakeholders on the bills concerning the Rehabilitation and Rehabilitation Centres, the operation of University Hospitals and University Clinics, as well as the forwarding to the Legal Service for legislative review of the bill concerning the Patient Advocate.

Damianos said that semiotically, today's Press Conference coincides with his first hundred days at the helm of the Ministry - as he said - he is particularly happy that he managed to put his stone in order to put important bills on the road to implementation or implementation.

On the promotion of prevention programmes, he said that new programmes for the prevention of cancer and other diseases are being planned in order to enhance the public health and well-being of the population.

Referring to other projects which have upgraded the care services provided, Mr. Damianos said that the new Dialysis Unit at Paphos Hospital became fully operational in February 2024, while the operation of the outpatient Pulmonology Clinics in the new, renovated building of the Pulmonology-Physiology Clinic at Troodos Hospital began. In addition, infrastructure of the Public Hospitals was improved and equipment worth 22 million was upgraded.
