The Minister of Health, Dr. Poppy Kanari, addressed today the opening ceremony of the Joint Action of the EU Member States on the definition of the integrated electronic health record of the European citizen. The meeting, which will conclude tomorrow, is taking place in the premises of the Permanent Representation of the RoC to the EU in Brussels.
The aim of the project is to create the standards and prepare the specifications for the electronic health record of the citizen in order to enable its interoperability at European level. The implementation of the Action is funded by the EU Health Programme (EU4Health) with a budget of more than €5 million.
The Joint Action (JA) is coordinated by Cyprus through the National e-Health Authority. This is the first time that our country is coordinating the work of the Joint Action of the EU Member States. Competent Authorities for eHealth and other Associated Entities from all EU Member States, including Norway, are taking part.
In her intervention, the Minister of Health welcomed all participants to the project and wished the objectives of the action well. Digitisation, she noted, can provide information for policy making, enhance preventive strategies for healthcare as well as access to health information for patients and providers.
At the same time, she thanked the European Commission and personally the Commissioner for Health and Food Safety, Ms Stella Kyriakidou, for the support provided to Member States to enable them to meet the challenges in the field of eHealth.
In conclusion, Dr Kanari welcomed the coordination of the project by Cyprus and the National eHealth Authority and assured that the Ministry of Health will continue to encourage and support efforts to develop the eHealth sector.
