Inpatient discharges from hospitals contracted with the General Health System (GHS)

In 2022, 94.654 discharges were given to inpatients, i.e. patients who stayed in a hospital for at least one night, an increase of 5.9% compared to 89,357 discharges in 2021. Part of the increase seen is due to the gradual inclusion of new hospitals in the GHS. Of the discharges given in 2022, 45.9% involved hospitals of the State Health Services Agency (SHS), while 54.1% involved private hospitals contracted to the GHS. The corresponding rates for 2021 were 46.0% and 54.0%.

The largest number of inpatient discharges was from the specialty of Obstetrics and Gynaecology with a rate of 15.0%, followed by the specialties of General Surgery with 14.7%, Pathology with 12.0%, Cardiology with 10.9% and Orthopaedics with 9.8%.

The term specialty refers to the specialty of the physician who submitted a claim for the case. It should be noted that for each discharge, only one claim can be submitted exclusively by the physician assigned to the case, regardless of whether during the hospitalization the patient received health care services from physicians of other specialties.

According to the diagnosis at discharge, diseases of the circulatory system recorded a rate of 12.4%, followed by diseases of the digestive system with 12.3%, neoplasms with 11.4%, diseases of the respiratory system with 10.6%, pregnancy, childbirth and maternity with 10.5%, trauma, poisoning and other external causes with 9.3% and diseases of the genitourinary system with 9.1%.

Day patient discharges from hospitals contracted with the General Health System (GHS)

In 2022, 278,059 discharges were given to day patients, i.e. patients who were admitted to a hospital, treated and discharged on the same day, an increase of 20.3% compared to 2021 when 231,109 discharges were given to day patients. This increase is partly due to the inclusion of new private day care hospitals in the GHS in 2022. Of the discharges given in 2022, 56.2% were from OCYPF day hospitals, while 43.8% were from private day hospitals contracted with GFS. The corresponding percentages for 2021 were 62.7% and 37.3%.

Regarding discharges by physician specialty, the largest percentage of 46.3% was for the specialty of Nephrology, followed by Pathological Oncology with 16.3% and Hematology with 8.0%.

Outpatient visits

In 2022, there were 7,669.535 outpatient visits compared to 7,202,579 in 2021, an increase of 6.5%.

Of the total visits made in 2022, 879,584 (11.5%) were made in the outpatient clinics of hospitals and health centers under the OCYPY and 6,789,951 (88.5%) were made to private sector physicians contracted with the GESY.

Regarding the medical care provider, of outpatient visits to personal physicians, 11.8% involved visits made to hospitals and health centers of the OCYPY, while the remaining 88.2% involved visits to private physicians contracted with the GESY. The corresponding percentages for 2021 were 14.3% and 85.7%.

Of the outpatient visits to specialists, 11.1% involved visits made to hospitals and health centres of the SHI system, while the remaining 88.9% involved visits to private physicians contracted to the SHI system. The corresponding percentages for 2021 were 12.3% and 87.7%.

Deaths by cause of death

In 2022, 7.404 deaths of Cyprus residents and visitors that occurred in Cyprus. 52.3% (3,873 deaths) involved men and 47.7% (3,531 deaths) involved women. The main causes of death were diseases of the circulatory system (24.5%), neoplasms (21.2%), COVID-19 (9.3%), diseases of the endocrine glands, nutrition and metabolism (8.6%), and diseases of the respiratory system (7.9%). The other causes of death followed with lower percentages.

Methodological Information

Definitions

Inpatient - A person who has passed all procedures for admission to a hospital and for whom a "Patient File" has been prepared and who has remained in the hospital for treatment for at least one night.

Day patient - Shall mean a person who has passed all procedures for admission to a nursing facility and for whom a "Patient File" has been prepared and who was admitted and discharged on the same day.

Discharge or Dismissal - Is the completion of a period of medical care as an inpatient or day patient, regardless of whether the patient returned home, was sent to another hospital, discharged against medical advice, or passed away.

Outpatient visit - is a visit by a patient to an outpatient department of a hospital or clinic or to a dispensary.

Data Sources and Coverage

Coverage. From June 2019, the implementation of the GHS started, first at the level of primary care (outpatient visits) and then in June 2020, the implementation of the GHS was extended to inpatient care. This press release presents data on primary and inpatient care from all hospitals and practices that are contracted to the GESY, both in the SHI and in the private sector. The number of private hospitals contracted to the GHS is gradually increasing. Data refer to the areas controlled by the State.

Inpatient and day patient discharges: Data on patients admitted for treatment and discharged from hospitals contracted with the GHS come from the Health Insurance Agency (HIA) system.

Outpatient visits: Data on outpatient visits made to all hospitals and physicians contracted with the GIS are derived from the Health Insurance Agency (HIA) system.

Causes of death: The source for deaths by cause is the Cause of Death File of the Health Monitoring Unit of the Ministry of Health. The total number of deaths recorded in the Causes of Death File includes all deaths that occurred in Cyprus (residents and visitors) and deaths of Cyprus residents that occurred abroad.
