The Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports and Youth expresses its deepest sorrow at the death of the distinguished writer and scholar Lefkios Zafeiriou. Lefkios Zafeiriou has left on another journey towards the light, with poetry as his companion.

He was distinguished for his morality, modesty, his faith in life, since his work was in perfect harmony with his life. He was born in Larnaca. In 1968 he went to Athens where he studied literature at the University of Athens while attending journalism courses. He worked as a philologist in secondary education. During 2004-2006 he taught at Rizokarpaso High School. He had a direct communication with the students, which made him very popular in the student world.
He participated together with an editorial team of the Cyprus magazine Signo (1992-1998) together with: Alexis Ziras, Kostas Nicolaides, and Nadia Charalambidou as well as in the editorial team of the magazine Akti (Winter 1989 - Spring 1991) together with Nikos Orphanidis and Prodromos Prodromou and in the editorial team of the magazine Ylandron together with Michalis Pieris and Kostas Lympouris (2001-2002).
For his literary work he was honoured with many awards and distinctions. He was awarded the Poetry Prize for his collection "Almost Midizones" (1977) and for his collection "The Sadness of Afternoon" (2007).
In prose, he was awarded the Short Story Prize for his work "The Bandits" (1982) and for his work "With Piety and Regret" (2013).
Studies on Andreas Kalvos opened a new horizon in Calvin studies. In the library of the University of Glasgow he located, with the help of the then sixteen-year-old student Tefkos Hacholiadis, the latent Ode of Andreas Kalvos Elpis Patridos (1st edition 1819, London) which he re-edited with notes.
He then published the book "The life and work of Andreas Kalvos" in 2006 by Metahimio, which was awarded the Kostas and Eleni Ouranis Prize of the Academy of Athens.
In 2018, he published the book Overtime and supplements to the biography of Andreas Kalvos , which was awarded the State Prize for Study.

The Board of Directors of the Writers' Union had unanimously decided to award the "G.F. Pierides" Prize for the year 2022 to Lefkios Zafiriou for his overall contribution to Cypriot and Greek Letters.
The death of Lefkios Zafeiriou leaves an unfulfilled void in Greek letters.
His funeral will be held at public expense.
