It is with great pleasure that we are here today for the signing of the Contract for the provision of services for the preparation of the Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (SUMP) for the wider urban area of the free Famagusta District.

The preparation of the Plan was awarded, following a tender, to the Consortium "Mobilityinchain Srl + A.L.A. Planning Partnership Consultancy LLC", at a cost of €91.630 (including VAT) and with a completion period of 12 months.

It is noted that the project is co-financed by the Cohesion Fund of the European Union at a rate of 85% through the Operational Programme "Competitiveness and Sustainable Development" and 15% from national resources.

The object of the Contract is to provide services for the development of a Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (SUMP) for the free Famagusta Province, which will take into account all relevant integrated projects and plans, studies and projects that are being promoted, as well as those that have been implemented. Emphasis will also be placed on regeneration for the revitalisation of urban cores, through specific sustainable mobility measures. The preparation of the SDMP for the free Famagusta District will be based on the new ELTIS guidelines (2019).

Sustainable mobility is linked to broader objectives, to which we are committed at European level for sustainable cities, to tackle climate change, reduce air and greenhouse gas emissions and use energy more efficiently. The Ministry of Transport, Communications and Works, and in particular the Department of Public Works, actively supports Sustainable Urban Mobility.

Planning for sustainable urban mobility means changing the everyday life and culture of citizens. The key axes in urban mobility issues are integrated spatial, urban planning and transport planning, the use and development of urban transport infrastructure and the use of public transport, the redevelopment of urban space, with the promotion of soft and active forms of mobility and the support and use of technology.

The main objective of the SDS is to meet the different mobility needs of all our fellow citizens and to create a modern, attractive and green urban transport system by ensuring accessibility for all users, enhancing the quality of the urban environment and urban design, promoting active mobility, ensuring personal safety and security in the transport system, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, energy consumption and improving the quality of the environment. The promotion of sustainable mobility in our cities improves the quality of life and enhances green growth.
