We are here today for the annual award ceremony of the National Guard (NF) conscripts who systematically used the Free Movement Scheme during the period between 1 September 2023 and 31 May 2024.
From the outset, I would like to express my sincere thanks to CNP Insurance for hosting the event, which has now become an institution. I would particularly like to thank the Group's First Executive Director, Mr. Takis Fidias, the General Manager, Mr. Andreas Stylianou, as well as the entire staff of the company for the cordial and constructive cooperation, and for the kind sponsorship of the ten electronic tablets, which we will hand over today to our award-winning National Guardsmen.
I also extend my special congratulations to our soldiers for the trust with which they have surrounded the Free Movement of Soldiers Scheme, which we as the Ministry of Defence have been successfully implementing in recent years.
An innovative scheme, which, after being tested initially on a pilot basis, has been improved along the way and established as a necessary measure that contributes significantly to improving the living conditions of our conscripts during their service. Through it, the National Guardsmen and contracted soldiers of the Force are provided with free transportation during their arrival and departure from the camps by buses, which are hired for this purpose.
In addition, the implementation and operation of the Free Transportation Scheme contributes to reducing the inconvenience to the families of our National Guardsmen and to limiting the financial burden on them for the transportation of their children.
Furthermore, the implementation and operation of the Free Transportation Scheme contributes to reducing the inconvenience to the families of our National Guardsmen and to limiting their financial burden for the transportation of their children.
At the same time, the Scheme promotes the use of public transport, reducing the need to use private vehicles, helping to reduce traffic on public roads and the inconvenience it causes, while at the same time raising awareness among AF personnel on issues of sustainability, pollution reduction and environmental protection.
The main concern of the Ministry of Defence is the safe movement of our personnel to and from AF camps. It is indeed very sad that every year our fellow human beings, especially young people, lose their lives or are seriously injured due to a reckless and impulsive action, due to a recklessness and a momentary lack of care and consideration.
The tangible results of the Free Movement Scheme demonstrate that it has made a decisive contribution to our efforts to prevent and reduce the incidence of road traffic accidents in the ranks of the AF.
It is for this reason that good driving and the acquisition of a road awareness culture among our staff are areas of road safety that concern us on a daily basis.
Let us not forget that the awareness of each driver's responsibility contributes to maintaining safe and pleasant traffic for all. All of us who use the road network must contribute to reducing the risk of accidents and maintaining the safety of ourselves and others.
With patience, forbearance and cooperation we will succeed in creating a safer road environment.
On an annual basis, in cooperation with approved non-governmental organizations and with the contribution of the Cyprus Police, informative lectures and presentations are organized in order to educate, provide information and raise awareness. I assure you that the Ministry of Defence will continue to make every effort to achieve our common goals.
Thank you.
