Total Employment: 54,697

Government employment in February 2024 stood at 54,697 people. There were 23,161 people employed in the Public Service, 17,575 in the Education Service and 13,961 in the Security Forces.

The Public Service employed 11,953 permanent employees, 4,275 permanent employees (PTEs), 1,245 fixed-term employees (FTEs) and 5,688 hourly employees.

The Public Service employed 11,953 permanent employees, 4,275 permanent employees (FTEs), 1,245 fixed-term employees (FTEs) and 5,688 hourly employees. The largest proportion of employees in the Civil Service was made up of permanent employees (51.6%) and the smallest of EEA employees (5.4%).

The Education Service employed 11,888 permanent employees, 1,186 SNEs, 4,360 EEA employees and 141 hourly employees. The Education Service had the highest percentage of permanent staff (67.6%) and the lowest percentage of hourly staff (0.8%).

The Security Forces employed 8 209 permanent staff, 4 726 SNEs, 300 EEA and 726 hourly staff. The largest proportion of employees in the Security Forces were permanent staff (58.8%) and the smallest were EEA staff (2.1%).

Note

From January 2024, the distinction between permanent and temporary staff will be abolished. The Office for National Statistics has realigned the structure of government staff into permanent, permanent employees (PTEs), fixed-term employees (FTEs) and hourly staff. Data for January 2024 have been revised.

Methodological Information

Data Coverage

Government employment includes: the Civil Service, the Education Service and the Security Forces. The Civil Service includes employees of Ministries, Departments and Agencies. The Educational Service includes employees serving in school units and the staff of the Productivity Centre and the Higher Hotel Institute. The Security Forces include: the Police, the Fire Service and the National Guard. In all three categories, employees are divided into permanent, permanent and temporary employees and hourly staff (regular, temporary and seasonal).

The figures do not include Members of the House of Representatives (Members of Parliament and Representatives of Religious Groups).

Source of Data

The source of data on employment in the Government is the General Accounting Office of the Republic. The data refer to persons who were paid in a given month regardless of the period and duration of employment.
