Total Employment: 54,546
Government employment in December 2023 increased by 860 persons (1.6%) compared to the same month in 2022 and reached 54,546 persons. Permanent staff saw a decrease of 710 people (-2.8%), from 25,466 to 24,756. In temporary staff there is an increase of 3,166 persons (15.8%) reaching 23,146 compared to 19,980 persons in December 2022. The increase is primarily attributed to the increase in temporary staff in the Education Service, mainly due to the abolition of the purchase of services scheme in support programmes of the Ministry of Education, Sports and Youth from the 2023 - 2024 school year.
A decrease is observed in all categories of permanent staff while an increase is observed in all categories of temporary staff. The largest change is in temporary staff in the Education Service (36.0% increase). Hourly staff shows a decrease (-19.4%), which is mainly due to the transfer of hourly staff from the Ministry of Health to the State Health Services Agency, which is included in the Broad Public Sector, from January 2023.
Compared to November 2023, the largest change is in temporary staff in the Education Service (3.6% increase). Employment in other staff categories remained very close to November 2023 levels.
