The Commissioner for Gender Equality, Ms. Josie Christodoulou, is in New York to participate in the 68th Session of the United Nations Commission for the Status of Women (CSW). Ms Christodoulou is representing the Republic of Cyprus, accompanied by a multi-member National Delegation, members of the National Mechanism for Women's Rights, who will also participate in the Session.
More than 160 countries participate in the Session, which is held every year at the United Nations headquarters.
In the margins of the Session of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women, Ms Christodoulou will hold meetings with Ministers of Equality and representatives of National Mechanisms for Women's Rights from various countries. She will also meet with the Chairperson of the Council of Europe's Group of Experts on Combating Violence against Women and Domestic Violence (GREVIO) Ms. Maria-Andriani Kostopoulou and with the heads Ms. Alia El-Yassir and Ms. Belén Sanz Luque of the United Nations Organization for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women).
In the framework of the Summit, the Republic of Cyprus is co-organising an event with Portugal, Jordan and Panama and representatives of the Council of Europe and UN Women are participating as speakers.
On the occasion of the Summit, the Commonwealth is organizing the Annual Consultation of National Mechanisms for Women's Rights, in which the Commissioner for Gender Equality will participate as Chairperson of the National Mechanism for Women's Rights of Cyprus. Ms. Rachel Vogelstein, Director of the White House Council on Gender Policy. While in Washington, D.C., Ms. Christodoulou will visit Georgetown University, where she will engage with female and male students on gender equality issues at a roundtable discussion hosted by Ms. Melanne Verveer, Executive Director of the Institute for Women, Peace and Security at Georgetown University and former U.S. Ambassador for Women's International Affairs.
