In order to prepare the new National Strategy for Gender Equality 2024-2026, a broad consultation between the Office of the Commissioner for Gender Equality and the wider civil society took place today at the Presidential Palace.
In the context of budgetary discipline, said Commissioner Josie Christodoulou in her address, the aim is to create a workable strategy over a three-year period, which can be reviewed and will include a few but targeted and implementable actions.
The consultation was attended by representatives from all Ministries and Deputy Ministries, the wider public sector, the National Mechanism for Women's Rights, NGOs, universities, trade unions, businesses and other institutions and organisations.
In her address, Ms Christodoulou stressed the importance that the Government attaches to the promotion of gender equality, with special reference to the increased representation of women in government.
The Commissioner briefly presented actions that have already been implemented by her Office, such as, among others, the imposition of a zero VAT rate on women's sanitary products, the activation of 40 women bus drivers, partnerships with the Cyprus Basketball Federation, the CBCE, the Union of Municipalities, etc,
In conclusion, he underlined the importance of accelerating efforts to create and consolidate a culture of equality in Cyprus through collaborative and inclusive approaches.
At the end of the work, the conclusions of the working groups were presented, which will then be processed to form the draft strategy, with the aim of putting it to public consultation and then submitting it to the Council of Ministers before the end of the year.
Ms Christodoulou expressed the satisfaction of her Office for today's constructive discussion and good cooperation among the participants and participants, warmly thanking them for their ideas and contributions.
