The Forestry Department of the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment announces that today, Tuesday, 19 September 2023, at 15:15, a forest fire caused by lightning occurred at the boundaries of the Community of Lysos, near the Paphos Forest.
The intervention of the forest firefighting forces was immediate, resulting in the fire being brought under control at 17:30, burning an area of 8.0 decares, covered by pine trees and low wild vegetation.
Seven fire engines of the Forestry Department with 25 people operated to extinguish the fire. The Forestry Department's operations were supported by the Fire Department with one fire truck and volunteers from area communities.
The efforts of ground forces to extinguish the fire were assisted by three firefighting planes and two firefighting helicopters.
In addition, at 17:00, a pine tree was found burning, which had also been struck by lightning, in an area of the Pano Amiantou Community (Chrysovrisi area). The immediate response of the forces of the Forestry Department did not allow an extension of the incident.
