Foreign Minister Dr Konstantinos Kombos today participated in the proceedings of the informal EU Foreign Affairs Council held in Kiev.
In the context of the work of the informal Council, Mr. Kombos reiterated the firm commitment of the Republic of Cyprus to the United Nations Charter and by extension to the respect of universal principles of international law, making special reference to the need to respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine.
Referring to the EU's comprehensive strategy to support Ukraine, the Foreign Minister said that the best guarantee for Ukraine's security and resilience is its European perspective. In this context, he stressed that Cyprus is ready to provide all technical support, if and when requested, for the necessary reforms that will pave the way for the start of the country's accession negotiations. The Minister also raised the serious issue of the circumvention of EU sanctions against Russia, while calling for their immediate and unconditional implementation.
EU Foreign Ministers also met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, as well as with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba.
In a symbolic act, the Foreign Ministers paid a small tribute to the memory of the victims of the war by laying flowers at the memorial in Kiev.
In the margins of the Council, the Foreign Minister had a private meeting with his Ukrainian counterpart, Mr Dmytro Kuleba, during which he reiterated our country's support for Ukraine and its people.
