The Fifth International Scientific Conference of the cycle "Ancient Cypriot Literature throughout the centuries", with the special aspect "The founding myths of Cyprus throughout the centuries and Homer", was organized with great success. This Conference took place on Tuesday, 26 March 2024 (16:00 - 19:30), in the Hall of Events of the Pancyprian Gymnasium in Nicosia and on Wednesday, 27 March 2024 (8:30 - 13:00), in the Hall of Events of the Archbishop Makarios III Foundation.
The Conference was held under the auspices of the Honorable Minister of Education, Sports and Youth, Dr. Athena Michaelides and was organized by the Ministry of Education, Sports and Youth.P.A.N. (Directorate of Secondary General Education and Pedagogical Institute of Cyprus), in cooperation with the Department of Philology of the Faculty of Philosophy of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA) and the Laboratory of Cypriot Studies (ER.CY.ME.) of the Department of Philology of the Faculty of Philosophy of NKUA, the Department of Classical Studies and Philosophy of the University of Cyprus, the Association of Greek Cyprus Philologists "Stasinos" and the Association of Greek Cypriot Philologists S.E.K.F. - O.E.L.M.E.K.
This event aimed at promoting the study of Ancient Cypriot Literature both at the scientific level and in educational practice, as well as at linking Ancient Cypriot Literature as a cultural product with the historical course of Cyprus. The theme was approached interdisciplinary, as the themes of the Conference covered aspects of literature, art, music and language throughout its history. The contribution of Ancient Cypriot Literature to the formation of national identity and the general development of culture on our island was also highlighted.
On Tuesday, 26 March 2024, the proceedings of the Conference began with a welcome address by Dr Irene Paraskeva Rodosthenous, First Officer of Education (Y.P.A.N.) and President of the Board of Directors of the Association of Greek Cypriot Philologists "STASINOS". This was followed by greetings from Achilleas Chaldaiakis, Professor of Byzantine Musicology and Chant Art at the Department of Music Studies of the Faculty of Philosophy of the Hellenic University of Cyprus, Internal Member of the Board of Directors of the N.C.P.A. and President of the University of Athens Committee for Cyprus (UACC), Athanasia Smyrniotou, Professor at the School of Physical Education and Sports Science (SEFAA) of the N.C.P.A. and Member of the Board of Directors of the N.C.P.A, George A. Xenis, Professor of Ancient Greek Philology at the Department of Classical Studies and Philosophy at the University of Cyprus, Dimitris Tagliadoros, Philologist, President of O.E.L.M.E.K. and President of the Association of Greek Cypriot Philologists (S.E.K.F. - O.E.L.M.E.K.), Archimandrite of the Archdiocese Fr. Dr. George Christodoulou, on behalf of the Archbishop of New Justinian and All Cyprus, Mr. George, Dr. Natia Stylianou, on behalf of Dr. Vasiliki Kassianidou, Deputy Minister of Culture, and Dr. Irene Paraskeva Rodosthenous, on behalf of Dr. Athena Michaelides, Minister of Education, Sports and Youth.
Then, the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, through its representative Professor Achilleas Chaldaiakis, and the Association of Greek Philologists of Cyprus "STASINOS" through its representatives, Dr. Konstantinos Gialoukas, former President of the Association, and Dr. Irene Paraskeva Rodosthenous, current President, honoured the Director of Secondary General Education, Dr. Kyprianos D.
This was followed by a musical intervention with ancient Cypriot poetry set to music by the Quadrophonic Mixed Choir of the Department of Music Studies of the Hellenic University of Cyprus.

The choir was conducted by Nikolaos Maliaras, Professor of Historical Musicology at the Department of Music Studies of the Faculty of Philosophy of the Hellenic Academy of Sciences and Director - Conductor of the Four-voice Mixed Choir, Member of the H.P.A.C.
The main part of the Conference began with an introductory talk by the Emeritus Professor of Ancient Greek Philology (with emphasis on Ancient Cypriot Literature) of the Hellenic Academy of Sciences, Andreas I. Voskos, on "The founding myths of Cyprus throughout the centuries and Homer". Then, papers were presented by the Emeritus Professor of Post-Byzantine and Modern Greek Philology of the Hellenic University of Athens, Konstantinos Kasini, on the topic: "The poet, exile or guide of the city?", the Professor of Ancient History of the Department of History and Archaeology of the University of Cyprus, Theodoros Mavroyiannis, on "Settlement myths of Cyprus and the Alexandra of Lycophron", and the Professor of Latin Philology and Vice-Rector for Academic, International Relations and Outreach of the E.C.P.A., Vice President of the H.P.A.C., Sophia Papaioannou, on "Cyprus and Cypriot Myths in Roman Republican Poetry".
This was followed by two presentations that developed the Myth of Tefkros in Late Antiquity.Grammatiki Karla, Professor of Ancient Greek Philology at the University of Cyprus and Director of the Cyprus Studies Laboratory (ER.CY.ME.), on "Prose", while the Assistant Professor of Ancient Greek Philology at the University of Cyprus, Ekaterini-Nina Karvouni, in "Epic Poetry". Professor Emeritus of Medicine of the Hellenic University of Cyprus and the Faculty of Medicine of the European University Cyprus (E.U.C.).George Petrikkos and the Educator-Researcher Dr. Anastasia Hamatsou presented "Approaches and Meanings in the Myth and History of the Foundation of Ancient Idalion", while the Postdoctoral Researcher of the Department of Philology of the Hellenic University of Cyprus, Dr. Anastasia Hamatsou, presented "Approaches and Meanings in the Myth and History of the Foundation of Ancient Idalion", while the Postdoctoral Researcher of the Department of Philology of the Hellenic University of Cyprus. Dr. Antiopi Argyriou in her presentation entitled "I am a Cypriot" presented variations of settlement myths of Salamina and Paphos, placing them in historical context.
On Wednesday, 27 March 2024, the work of the second day of the Conference began with a presentation by the distinguished Cypriot poet Kyriakos Charalambides entitled "Methomirikon drunkenn mythos".Professor of Methodology in the Teaching of Ancient Greek Language and Literature at the School of Philosophy of the Hellenic University of Thessaloniki. Mariza Fountopoulou transferred the discussion to the teaching practice, as she presented the topic "The Homeric Epics in the new curriculum of Ancient Greek in the Gymnasium: modifications, enrichments and restorations". Subsequently, short presentations by students of the E.K.P.A. covered a multitude of topics within four thematic cycles: (a) Archaic epic poetry and Cyprian epic, Heroes and Nemesis, (b) Archaic epic poetry and the Homeric Hymn (Y1:V) To Aphrodite: Aphrodite and Tithonus, (c) The Sickness of Tefcros and the Settlement Myths of Cyprus, and (d) Methomeric Epic: Hospitality and Epic Poetry from Nestor to Dionysus.
The Conference concluded with papers demonstrating the presence of the tradition of founding myths and Homer in Modern Greek Literature. Theodosis Pilarinos, Professor Emeritus of Modern Greek Literature at the Ionian University, presented the topic "The aidedness of residential myths (from the mythical Idalion of Chalcinoras to the pseudonymous Idalion of Thodosis Pierides)", while two papers focused on the work of Kostas Montis: Professor of Modern Greek Literature - Modern Greek Literature of Cyprus at the University of the Aegean, Louisa Christodoulides, Kalliopi Papadodδημα, Philologist and PhD Candidate at the Department of Primary Education of the University of the Aegean, presented a paper entitled "The Homeric world in the poetic work of Kostas Montis", entitled "Homeric fragments of the ancient Greek myth in the poetic work of Kostas Montis" and Kalliopi Papadodδημα, Philologist and PhD Candidate at the Department of Primary Education of the University of the Aegean, presented a paper entitled "The Homeric world in the poetic work of Kostas Montis: A linguistic and hermeneutic approach". Finally, the Neohellenist, Postdoctoral Researcher of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and Head of the journal Kypriaki Estia, Dr Kyriakos Ioannou, presented a paper entitled "Starting from certain hom(er)genic connotations, or: a second reading of "Chiotissa" by Vassilis Michaelides".
The Conference was addressed to teachers of Literature in General Secondary Education and Secondary Technical and Vocational Education and Training, academics and researchers, writers, as well as the general public. Also, on the second day (27 March 2024), the proceedings of the Conference were attended by students of the 1st Orientation and Orientation Group of the 2nd and 3rd Lyceum and the Gymnasium, thus having the opportunity to benefit from the fruitful intellectual pursuits presented by renowned researchers, philologists and students of Antiquity.
